Founded in 1961 by the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary (FMM), the school is located in the Hougang area of Singapore. The school's motto is "Virtus et Scientia", which translates to "Virtue and Knowledge".
The school offers a six-year course leading to the GCE O-Level examination at Secondary 4 and the GCE A-Level examination at Secondary 6. The school has consistently produced good academic results, with a PSLE score range of 229-252 and an A-Level pass rate of over 90%.
HIHS offers a variety of CCAs including sports, performing arts, clubs, and societies. Some of the CCAs available include basketball, football, volleyball, choir, dance, guitar ensemble, Chinese orchestra, and robotics club.
The school has achieved many notable accomplishments in its history. In sports, the school has won national championships in basketball, football, volleyball, and floorball. The school's performing arts groups have also won numerous awards and accolades. The school's choir has won the prestigious SYF Choir of the Year award twice, in 2015 and 2017.
Notable alumni of HIHS include Chan Chun Sing, the current Minister for Education in Singapore, and Lim Biow Chuan, a member of parliament in Singapore.
